Stump the Deacons - Four Upstate Deacons share their experience of Deaconate with an extended Q & A

Deacon Panelists:

Deacon Bob Connor is a Permanent Deacon at Our Lady of the Rosary in Greenville, SC. Deacon Bob and Irene have a particular affinity for Pro-Life ministries, working on behalf of the unborn. The two were recognized by their Bishop with the Mother Teresa Pro-Life award for all their work in this area. He was recently named the Director for 40 Days for Life in the Upstate.

Deacon John Leininger was ordained a deacon in 2019, following 40 years of teaching Graphic Communication in high school and college. A member of Saint Andrew Catholic Church in Clemson since 1986, he served as an EM, Lector, and Retreat Leader. After a Christ Renews His Parish Weekend, Deacon John felt called to the deaconate and to prison ministry. He currently serves as Coordinator for Prison Ministry for the Diocese of Charleston.

Deacon Gustavo Suarez is a Permanent Deacon at Prince of Peace Parish. He was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico to Cuban refugee parents and at age six, his family moved to Atlanta, Georgia. He holds degrees in History, Political Science, Theology, and Law. Deacon Gus is an attorney with Ogletree Deakins, where his practice focuses on employment law. Gus and his wife have taught marriage preparation, OCIA, and natural family planning classes at Prince of Peace.

Deacon George Wilson, Permanent Deacon at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, earned degrees in History from the University of South Carolina, and Theology from St. Leo University. Prior to the Deaconate, Deacon George spent 16 years with the SC State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and now serves as a Senior Global Financial Crimes Investigator at Bank of America. His unique blend of law enforcement and ministry gives him a distinctive perspective on the Church’s presence in the world.
